The value of user experience

If you are a smart manager you hired at least one user experience professional that has lived through the dot-bomb period. Why? because these are survivors that may have valuable knowledge you can use when attempting to survive the current economic downturn.
But before you start looking at your user experience team while entertaining funny ideas about layoffs you may want to consider the value that user experience professionals bring to your company:
1. User experience professionals can save you money in development costs, customer support, the writing efforts of user manuals, the development of extensive "Help" tools etc.
2. User experience professionals can help you optimize the efforts of other departments. For example good user research can help both marketing and sales. Prototypes, whether they are static paper prototypes or complex interactive prototypes can help your sales and training departments.
